Meet The New Speaker, Same as the Old Speaker

Robert DeLeo has been confirmed as the new Speaker of the House on Beacon Hill.

The Massachusetts House has voted for Ways and Means Chairman Robert DeLeo to become its next speaker.

House members voted 137-16 during a formal session today to install the Winthrop Democrat to the powerful post.

DeLeo takes over after the resignation of Salvatore DiMasi, who left the House on Tuesday amid ethics questions.

DeLeo’s chief rival for the position, House Majority Leader John Rogers of Norwood, conceded Tuesday that he didn’t have enough votes to take the seat.

House Democrats backed DeLeo by a unanimous voice vote during a caucus earlier Wednesday.

At the caucus, Rogers said he was there to ensure democracy continues and to ensure a smooth transition.

And we are still waiting to find out about the shady half of the contributions to DeLeo’s campaign last year….
