Free Wi-Fi is Useless If You’re Dead

Yesterday’s BostonNOW talked about the latest news about “Mayor Thomas Menino’s $15 million dream for citywide wireless” in Boston… meanwhile, the residents of Boston are still suffering from Menino’s failed gun buyback program, which did nothing to reduce gun related crime in the city.

I guess it’s nice to know that if you happen to get shot in the city of Boston with your laptop, you’ll soon be able to look up how to treat your gunshot wound.

I’m not quite sure what your point is here. It is very unfortunate that there are still shootings taking place in Boston, however, are you suggesting that the mayor put other initiatives on hold until the shooting rate is zero?

What else should the mayor be doing to reduce violence?

I just did a post a few days ago – more generally about the “free” wi-fi craze around the country.

If you’re interested, you can find it here.

Or feel free to delete the link (I don’t mean to link-spam you!). Boston is by no means the only place talking about this. Many cities are finding out that it’s far more costly than they ever imagined to set up a system.

  3. BigBish says:

maybe the point is the 1.5 Mil could be better spent in law enforcement instead of enabling yuppies to sit in Panera Bread with thier laptops open taking up space

  4. Charlie D. says:

Could it though? Is that money better spent putting more law enforcement out there to stop people from committing crimes or is it better spent providing affordable Internet access for those who can’t afford it already?

What’s a more attainable goal with that money, trying to break through the wall of “Stop Snitching”, or empowering people with access to information from all over the world?

  5. V says:

Internet access is available at the public library, public safety isn’t.

  6. BigBish says:

Yes Charlie it is. Thats perhaps the dumbest question I’ve heard all week.

Might as well shut this discussion down.
