Romney To Clean Up The Turnpike Authority

In yet another example of Romney’s stellar leadership in the aftermath of the Big Dig tragedy, the governor has launched a “housecleaning” at the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority. Romney’s plans includie an independent review aimed to cut costs and force the release of Big Dig documents (atleast, those documents Tom Reilly hasn’t taken to the paper shredder yet). Of course, Democrats can’t handle Romney’s power play.
But the move to appoint the panel was immediately criticized last night as a political power play by Democratic legislators. Romney and top Democrats have been battling over Big Dig spending and a key borrowing bill that failed to win approval at the end of the Legislature’s formal session Monday.
“This smacks of the governor being political,” House Transportation Committee Chairman Joseph Wagner (D-Chicopee) said. “I question the need for an independent (panel) when the governor already has three appointments on the five-member Turnpike Authority board.”
Excuse me, Rep. Wagner, but isn’t your statement a bit political? Or how about the $1,800 you have accepted from Big Dig lobbyists?
Perhaps Rep. Wagner is worried about Romney’s independent panel. Is there something they could find that Wagner doesn’t want to be found?
