Healey Proposes Malpractice Reform

by Aaron Margolis, May 23rd, 2006 at 12:23pm

Republican candidate for Governor Kerry Healey is proposing malpractice reform.

BOSTON Lieutenant Governor Kerry Healey is proposing an overhaul of the state’s medical malpractice laws.

Healey says malpractice insurance rates are driving doctors out of business or prompting them to practice what she calls defensive medicine.

Among other provisions, the bill would allow doctors to acknowledge mistakes or apologize to patients without those admissions being used against them in court.

The lieutenant governor also wants to reduce lawyer fees from 25 percent to 15 percent for verdicts of more than 600-thousand dollars.

More details to follow as they are released.
