Massport Miffed Over Manchester Airport Name Change

by Matt Margolis, April 20th, 2006 at 12:04am

The other night, Aldermen in Manchester, NH voted to rename their Manchester Regional Airport to Manchester-Boston Regional Airport.

This name alteration has Massport less than pleased.

New Hampshire airport officials touted the change as a way to let the rest of the country know there’s a relatively local option to flying in and out of Logan.

A Manchester Airport-sponsored study of 15 communities west of the Mississippi River found that 83 percent of respondents had never heard of Manchester Airport. But 93 percent had heard of Boston.

I have flown out of Manchester Regional Airport (MHT) several times. I definitely agree it is a nice and less expensive way to fly, and it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to park there.

But MHT’s problem is not in their name, but in their marketing. How much are they selling themselves as the cheaper alternative to Logan? I’ve never seen an ad (locally or out of state that compared ticket prices for flights between popular travel spots and Manchester vs. Boston.

Will this name change be the answer to their problems? I doubt it. But, maybe there’s more in a name then we thought.

UPDATE: Logan won’t fight MHT name change
