Abandoned Newborn Found Alive In Trash Bin

Yesterday afternoon, an hours-old baby boy was founding in trash bin near a police station. The mother of the child called hospital officials to alert them to the child’s location.
An hours-old baby boy was found abandoned in a trash bin in an alley near the police station after the mother alerted hospital officials to his location.
The baby was found Sunday afternoon in one of three bins in the alley. He was treated by paramedics who found him, taken to Noble Hospital then transferred to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, said Police Detective Lt. Michael McCabe.
“I can tell you the child was screaming and breathing and doing baby-type things,” McCabe said.
The mother apparently had reported the baby’s location to officials at the Springfield hospital, who then called police.
McCabe told The Republican newspaper of Springfield that he knows the mother’s identity, but she was not immediately interviewed. He said he had no information about the infant’s father.
The state Department of Social Services will determine the custody of the child. Keith O’Connor, public relations manager for Baystate Medical, said any information, including the baby’s medical condition, would have to come from DSS. A spokeswoman for the department did not immediately return a call for comment Monday.
The Baby Safe Haven Law of 2004 waives prosecution for child abandonment when parents abandon children within seven days of birth at a hospital, police station or staffed fire station.
Does the Baby Safe Haven Law permit the dumping an hours old baby in trash bin? Just because the trash bin was in alley near the police station, that is not a ’safe haven’ location.
