Kennedy Integral In Stalling Cape Wind

by Aaron Margolis, April 10th, 2006 at 01:19pm

Renewable energy sources are a must, but not in his backyard, demands Senator Kennedy. While the Senator previously claimed he was unaware of language added to a bill that would give Governor Mitt Romney the power to veto the Cape Wind Project, a Kennedy spokeswoman later said he had urged a conference committee leader to support the new language that will likely destroy the Cape Wind Project.

Specifically, Kennedy called U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, the veteran lawmaker who, according to sources, wrote the language.

”The senator’s opposition to Cape Wind has not changed and the conferees knew where he stood on this,” Kennedy spokeswoman Melissa Wagoner said.

Interestingly, U.S. Sen. John Kerry, who has largely stayed out of the debate, had called conferees urging them to defeat the amendment.

Conferees submitted the reports last week, but the full House and Senate won’t vote on the amendment - part of an $8.7 billion Coast Guard authorization bill - for at least two weeks.
